Dead or Alive: Towards a Sustainable Wildlife trade

The objective of the conference is to induce an interdisciplinary discussion on sustainable wildlife trade through two specific experiences Belgium has recently gained in the field of bushmeat trade (day one) and trade in reptiles and amphibians (day two). It will allow for discussion on the risks posed by such trades at the interface of Human Health, Animal Health, and Environmental Health. As a result, key recommendations will be debated for further action in Belgium and in the European Union. Based on the outcome of the conference, a brief will be made available.

The conference will start with presentations from various backgrounds speakers covering different aspects of each selected theme. John Fa from the Manchester Metropolitan University (UK) will provide a general introduction for bushmeat and Mark Auliya from the Zoological Research Museum Alexander Koenig (Germany) will give an introduction on the trade in reptiles and amphibians. Scientific experts will then take the floor and share information from different perspectives. In the afternoon two break-out sessions will be organised with the aim of reflecting on suggested recommendations and identifying ways to implement them.

This conference is organised by the Federal Public Service Health, Food Chain Safety and Environment with the scientific support of the Belgian Biodiversity Platform.
