The society for vector ecology ESOVE 22nd conference
The European Society for Vector Ecology (ESOVE) is a professional organization formed in 1968 committed to solving many complex problems encountered in the field of vector biology and control – among these are the suppression of disease vectors through integration of control elements, such as environmental management, biological control and public education. ESOVE organizes one European conference every year, which is an internationally recognized and prestigious conference.
Aedes koreicus, a vector on the rise: Pan-European genetic patterns, mitochondrial and draft genome sequencing
A new publication came out concerning the exotic Aedes koreicus mosquito, a recent invader on the European continent that was introduced to several new places since its first detection in 2008. Compared to other exotic Aedes mosquitoes with public health significance that invaded Europe during the last decades, this species’ biology, behavior, and dispersal patterns were poorly investigated to date. ...
Anopheles maculipennis Complex in Belgium and The Netherlands (Diptera: Culicidae)
After its recent identification in Belgium using DNA-based technologies, a new member of the Anopheles maculipennis complex was also recently discovered in the Netherlands: Anopheles daciae. Because several pathogens were isolated from species of the Maculipennis complex, including malaria, it is important to be able to identify them accurately and to map their distribution for monitoring programs.
DNA Identification and Diversity of the Vector Mosquitoes Culex pipiens s.s. and Culex torrentium in Belgium (Diptera: Culicidae)
A new publication came out which gives an overview of the diversity and distribution of Culex pipiens s.s. biotypes and Culex torrentium in Belgium (2017-2019, MEMO). Full publication available here.
The International Conference on DNA Barcoding and Biodiversity
BopCo has attended the International Conference on DNA Barcoding and Biodiversity (ICDBB) in Sofia (Bulgaria) on 25-27/05/2022. The event is organized by the Institute of Plant Physiology and Genetics, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, as part of the BULCode project (https://www.plantbulcode.com/) supported by the National Program “European Scientific Networks”, Ministry of Education and Science of Bulgaria. The ICDBB 2022 was a hybrid event with in-person aspects held at the Park hotel Moskva and virtual posters and presentations.
From a long-distance threat to the invasion front: a review of the invasive Aedes mosquito species in Belgium between 2007 and 2020
A new publication came out reviewing the different mosquito monitoring activities undertaken in Belgium since 2007. Multiple exotic Aedes species were found introduced or estblished. Full publication available here.
International Conference on Aquatic Invasive Species (ICAIS)
BopCo has attended the International Conference on Aquatic Invasive Species (ICAIS) in Oostende on 18-22/04/2022. The Conference was co-hosted by the Netherland’s Office for Risk Assessment & Research (NVWA/BuRO) and Belgium’s Research Institute for Nature and Forest (INBO), with the support of Canada’s Invasive Species Centre, the ICAIS Secretariat. The ICAIS 2022 was a hybrid event with in-person aspects held at the Thermae Palace Hotel, Oostende, Belgium and virtual posters and presentations live online.
Empowering Biodiversity Research conference II
On May 24-25, the Belgian Biodiversity Platform is inviting you to the Empowering Biodiversity Research conference, EBR II, taking place at the AfricaMuseum in Tervuren (Leuvensesteenweg 13, 3080). Find out more following this link. BopCo will present its activities on day 2.
Two fatal autochthonous cases of airport malaria, Belgium, 2020
A new publication came out reporting an outbreak investigation of two fatal cases of autochthonous Plasmodium falciparum malaria that occurred in Belgium in September 2020. Various hypotheses of the potential source of infection were investigated. The most likely route of transmission was through an infectious exotic Anopheles mosquito that was imported via the international airport of Brussels or the military airport Melsbroek.
